WASHINGTON DC, June 9, 2022 ~ The US House of Representatives passed Wednesday afternoon Michigan Representative Elissa Slotkin‘s gun storage bill, the “Safe Guns, Safe Kids Act.

If passed in the US Senate, the bill would require gun owners to lock up their guns if children have reasonable access, and would give owners up to five years of jail time if a child uses an unsecured firearm to injure themselves or others, or uses the gun in commission of a crime.

We were glad to have bipartisan support,” said Representative Slotkin to 760 WJR‘s Paul W. Smith. “I was very proud of one of our Michiganders, Fred Upton, who joined with us and voted for the bill.

The bill was passed in the US House as part of the larger “Protecting Our Kids Act,” which will also raise the minimum legal age to purchase a semiautomatic centerfire rifle from 18 to 21, and limit the maximum magazine capacity to 15 rounds.

Listen below as Representative Slotkin talks with Paul W. about the lives she says this bill will save, and the work that still needs to be done in curbing gun violence.
