COLLEGE PARK, Maryland, October 1, 2022 ~ The Michigan State Spartans fell Saturday, loosing on the road to the Maryland Terrapins 27-13. MSU seemed to keep up until late in the second quarter, though a missed point after attempt and a blocked field goal brought the Spartans into the half down by one. The Maryland defense took over from there, effectively shutting down the Spartans and keeping them from goal.

(CONTINUED) “Very disappointed,” MSU Football Coach Mel Tucker told the press post game. “I told the team … I said listen … there’s not a whole lot to say right now … I can’t make ‘em feel any better. When we turn on the film it’s gonna be a lack of execution … offense, defense, special teams … we didn’t score enough points on offense. We didn’t do really anything in the second half. We didn’t sustain drives, we didn’t score, we didn’t have any explosive gains.”
“Defensively, we didn’t get off the field early enough on third down,” continued Tucker. “We gave up too many big plays early, and we didn’t force any takeaways. Special teams was lack of execution. It was just a poor showing that way. So I want to go back, watch the film, and then we’re going to put together a plan so we play better football.”

(CONTINUED) By the numbers, junior quarterback Payton Thorne completed 27 of his 44 passes for 221 yards and one touchdown, while wide receiver Jayden Reed had a season-high seven catches for 61 yards and one touchdown.
On defense, both senior linebacker Ben VanSumeren and sixth-year senior cornerback Ameer Speed notched career high tackles with 14 and 12, respectively.
The Spartans return home this Saturday to face The Ohio State. Coverage begins at 2 p.m. on 760 WJR.
