GRAND RAPIDS, October 14, 2022 ~ Governor Gretchen Whitmer and GOP Candidate Tudor Dixon sparred yesterday in a gubernatorial debate at the WOOD-TV studios in Grand Rapids.
The contentious session displayed stark differences between the two candidates on the issues of gun control, school safety, infrastructure, and the economy, while barbs flew over Whitmer’s handling of the pandemic and Dixon’s denying of the 2020 election results.
The foremost issue of the evening however – as it has been with these candidates through much of this campaign – was abortion. This even as polling data suggests that inflation and cost of living are topics that matter more right now in the minds of voters.

(CONTINUED) “Michigan could revert to a 1931 law that makes it a felony … no exceptions for rape or incest, criminalizing doctors and nurses” said Whitmer. “The only reason that law is not in effect right now is because of my lawsuit stopping them.”
“My position on abortion is clear. I am pro life with exceptions for life of the mother,” said Dixon. “But I understand that this is going to be decided by the people of the state of Michigan, or by a judge … I will always respect the will of the voter.”
“I think it’s really ironic when Mrs. Dixon stands here and says that she will accept the will of the people,” said Whitmer. “This is a candidate who still denies the outcome of the 2020 election. This is a candidate who will not pledge to accept the outcome of the November 8th election … we cannot trust what you say.”
The candidates will meet again for a second one-hour debate to be held November 8 on the campus of Oakland University in Rochester. Coverage begins at 7 p.m. on WXYZ-TV7.
