EAST LANSING, October 15, 2022 ~ Homecoming at Spartans Stadium Saturday brought back hopes for the season as the green and white took a 34-28 double overtime victory against the Badgers.
The back-and-fourth close score thriller was capped when quarterback Payton Thorne threw a 27-yard pass to his longtime friend, wide receiver Jayden Reed, for the walk-off game-winning touchdown.
“We had very good intentional focus today as a football team,” MSU Head Football Coach Mel Tucker told the media post game. “We played complimentary football more often tonight … really proud of our guys and everyone in our organization for sticking together and pushing through adversity to be able to get the job done.”

(CONTINUED) Thorn completed 21 of his 28 passes for two touchdowns and no interceptions, while Reed caught nine passes for one touchdown, plus threw a 27-yard touchdown pass in overtime. Also scoring points were wide receiver Keon Coleman, who nabbed five receptions for 79 yards and two touchdowns, as well as running back Jalen Berger, who carried the ball 16 times for 60 yards and one touchdown.
On defense, the Spartans showed major improvements, keeping the badgers under 300 total yards while achieving eight tackles for loss, three sacks, and an interception.
The Spartans head next into a bye week as they prepare to take on undefeated Michigan at The Big House in Ann Arbor on October 29. Game time has yet to be announced. Catch coverage on 760 WJR.
