DETROIT, April 10, 2023 ~ A Detroit shelter and rehabilitation center is set to double its ability to help city residents.
Mariner’s Inn, a substance abuse treatment center, broke ground on Monday for a $24 million expansion of its building and services. The treatment center, located at 445 Ledyard Street near Little Caesar’s Arena, will serve women for the first time in its nearly 100-year history.
Mariner’s Inn provides residential substance abuse treatment programs, prevention programs, and drug-free housing to help combat drug addiction and homelessness, according to the shelter’s website. Currently, Mariner’s Inn can house about 60 to 70 people and serve 150 people.
The expansion will create permanent supportive and recovery housing, adding 84 units, according to WXYZ Detroit.

(CONTINUED) One of the people in attendance at the groundbreaking was Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who said this expansion will keep even more homeless people safe.
“Mariner’s Inn has been highly successful,” Duggan said to 760 WJR Host Mitch Albom. “You can be there for months at a time, have the support, and turn your life around, and we did it in the shadows of Little Caesar’s Arena.
“In other cities, they would be moving the homeless center out. In the city of Detroit, we doubled the size of it right behind Little Caesar’s Arena because we believe people of all incomes should be in all neighborhoods. It was a proud day.”
