DEARBORN, May 23, 2023 ~ After concerns were raised by lawmakers, the Ford Motor Co. is reversing course on abandoning AM radio in its vehicles.
On Tuesday, Ford CEO Jim Farley announced on social media that AM radio will stay in all 2024 vehicles, and that any cars already purchased can be updated to include it. This announcement came shortly after the company teased it is gearing towards its next generation of electric vehicles.
Following Ford’s announcement on dropping AM radio earlier this year, a bipartisan bill in Congress called the “AM for Every Vehicle Act” was introduced. Lawmakers cited AM radio’s role in broadcasting emergency alerts as to why it should stay in future vehicles.
“After speaking with policy leaders about the importance of AM broadcast radio as a part of the emergency alert system, we have decided to include it on all 2024 Ford and Lincoln Motor Co. vehicles,” Farley said on Twitter. “For any owners of Ford EVs without AM broadcast capability, we will offer a software update.”

Chief of TheDetroitBureau.com Paul Eisenstein said on 760 WJR’s “The Paul W. Smith Show“ that Ford should work towards driving EV prices down for consumers and competing with other EV manufacturers by working to maximize battery range.
“(Ford) is going to have a broad range of battery electric vehicles,” Eisenstein said. “The industry is beginning to see EV’s in every product segments out there.”
