DETROIT, May 30, 2023 ~ For the first time in decades, people will be able to witness high-speed race cars zipping through the streets of Downtown Detroit.
From June 2-4, the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix will take place near the Detroit Riverfront. The event will have drivers from the NTT INDYCAR Series, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, INDY NXT, and Trans Am Series.
The first grand prix was held in 1982 but moved over to Belle Isle a decade later. The grand prix took place on and off for the next 30 years on the island.

Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Returns Friday:
(CONTINUED) The 1.7-mile track features nine turns that will take racers down Jefferson Avenue, past the riverfront and around the General Motor Renaissance Center. Chairman of the Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix Bud Denker told 760 WJR’s Sean Baligian that cars will be scorching pavement at up to 190 miles an hour during the races.
“We are going to be a postcard to the world to show how great our city is,” Denker said.
Tickets for certain viewing areas can be purchased through the event’s website, though there will be multiple areas of free spectating.
Music stars Big Boi and Steve Aoki will be performing separate nights at the Grand Prix as well. A full schedule and parking guide can be found on the event’s website, with surrounding road closures listed on the city of Detroit’s website. The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will be open during the event with a special permit.
