CHAMPAIGN, Illinois, November 7, 2022 ~ The Spartans beat the Illini and their No. 1 ranked defense in a stunning 23-15 upset Saturday night — their biggest win of the season — all while playing with eight defensive players on indefinite suspensions, and others sidelined with injuries.
The Spartans were able to stop Illinois from scoring during the second and third quarters, pushing them to finish with their second-lowest point total this season, and on their own turf.
“It’s something we talked about all week – staying together,” said safety Xavier Henderson after the game. “Coach Tuck did a great job. It starts with him but then it becomes the leaders on the team to kind of talk about it throughout the locker room. Proud of our guys for sticking together playing a really good Illinois team.”

“It’s November and we have to play our best football here down the stretch,” said MSU Football Head Coach Mel Tucker. “Defensively, we’re playing at a high enough level that gives us a chance to win.”
