DETROIT, December 22, 2022 ~ A growing winter storm is expected to bring what the National Weather Service is referring to as a “once in a generation type event,” with alerts in 37 states, reaching as far south as Texas and Alabama.

The wind is going to ramp up significantly on Friday, and it would not surprise me to see 50, 55 mph wind gusts, especially Friday afternoon into Friday night,” said Local 4 Meteorologist Paul Gross to 760 WJR’s Guy Gordon.

When you get wind that is that high, I think there are going to be some scattered power outages…make sure you are set up with an alternative place to go for warmth, that has heat. If you lose power…you aren’t going to last long…

December 22, 2022 ~ Local 4 Meteorologist Paul Gross speaks with Sean about the upcoming winter storm that is supposed to start on Thursday night.

(CONTINUED) Thursday is to be the most difficult day for travel, with heavy snow and 30-below-zero wind chill bringing life-threatening conditions to holiday travelers.

Friday, the storm is expected to turn into a “bomb cyclone,” where the atmospheric pressure could reach the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane.

The cold weather will stay throughout the holiday weekend, which would make this the coldest Christmas in nearly 40 years for parts of the Midwest. Temperatures are expected to level out next week.
