LANSING, February 10, 2023 ~ Governor Whitmer delivered her state budget plan to the legislature this week, offering for consideration a record-setting $79 million package filled with tax cuts and spending programs.
“I am proud to introduce my executive budget proposal to lower costs, grow our economy, and build a brighter future for anyone who wants to call Michigan home,” said Governor Whitmer.

(CONTINUED) Highlights in the budget include an increase in the Earned Income Tax Credit, potentially giving back hundreds of thousands to low and middle income tax payers. Plans also call for reduced taxes on public and private pensions, as well as $180 income tax rebate checks for every Michigan citizen.

Additionally, the Governor is calling for increased funding for K-12 and higher education, with teacher support measures, tutoring programs, free breakfast and lunch for all public school students, and continuing education training programs for those in the workforce.

(CONTINUED) Also earmarked are additional incentives for businesses to invest in Michigan, funding for EV charging stations, works projects that would replace led pipe water lines in disadvantaged communities, and investments in state parks, especially Belle Isle Park in Detroit.
If passed in full, this record budget would clear out roughly $250 million of Michigan’s $9.2 billion surplus.
