DETROIT, March 8, 2023 ~ Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan took to a stage Tuesday inside the under-renovation Michigan Central Station to deliver his 10th State of The City address. The depot, once a symbol of Detroit decay and economic downturn, gave Duggan an ideal backdrop to illustrate his narrative of the path Detroit has taken from bankruptcy to what some are boasting as the next Silicon Valley.
Much of the evening’s message focused on the progress being made in many of Detroit’s neighborhoods, and the plans set into motion that are designed to connect them all. With Corktown as the centerpiece, Duggan praised the Ford Motor Company and CEO Jim Farley for their commitment to Detroit and their investment that has brought the company’s vehicle electrification and autonomous efforts to the historic district.

(CONTINUED) Beyond the depot’s structural renovations, Duggan highlighted the neighborhood’s coming infrastructure of wireless curbside vehicle charging capabilities, and the first ever lanes in America dedicated to autonomous vehicles.
The mayor also highlighted several other areas across the city that are either under or planned for redevelopment, with focus on tax abatements designed to attract investments and jobs, efforts to demolish or redevelop blighted housing, plans to develop affordable housing in neighborhoods across the city, and a commitment to connect it all through the Joe Louis Greenway, a 27 mile loop that will offer equitable spaces filled with activities, arts programming, and economic opportunities.

The mayor also worked to address the city’s gun violence concerns by unveiling ShotStoppers, a community violence intervention program that will work with two to four community activist groups that each have a strong history of working on violence prevention. These groups would spend several years focused on neighborhoods that have seen the highest levels of violence, with those groups that successfully reduce homicides and shootings earning performance grants.
