Poll Shows Strong Opposition to Prop 1 Grows When Full Ballot Language Read

LANSING, MI — A new EPIC-MRA poll shows passage of Proposal 1 could be in some trouble. According to the poll, 66 percent of respondents said they were opposed to Proposal 1 and 24 percent said they would support it. When read the full ballot language, opposition jumped to 71 percent. “It’s heading in the wrong direction,” said pollster Bernie Porn. “It’s pretty clear the ads are not connecting with voters.” EPIC-MRA polled 600 people between March 28-30. There is a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percent. Of those polled, 38 percent said they were strong or leaned Democrat, 34 percent were strong or leaned Republican, 23 percent were independent and 5 percent refused or had another affiliation.

EPIC-MRA also conducted a poll in January and found 46 percent of respondents supported the proposal over the 41 proposed. But that support dropped to 38 percent when respondents were read a detailed description that included references to related laws that would take effect. There were several reasons why respondents in the post recent poll either support or oppose the statewide ballot proposal.

For those who said they don’t support Prop 1:

32 percent said they are against the tax increase.
18 percent thing there is too much in the proposal.
13 percent said wasteful government spending.
9 percent cited a distrust in Michigan Government or Governor Snyder.

Why do people support Proposal 1? Respondents said:

48 percent of those who responded said road repairs are needed.
14 percent said funding is needed.
10 percent cited education funding.
9 percent said all of the items described are needed.
5 percent said they would support Prop 1 because there is no “Plan B.”
