DETROIT, MI – One more hurdle remains before construction can begin on the $650 million Red Wings arena and entertainment district in downtown Detroit. A Detroit City Council subcommittee voted Thursday to move a request for zoning changes that would allow construction to begin on the project, which will bring the issue before a full council. The formal City Council will vote on the zoning changes and site plan Tuesday, April 7.
The approval would, among other things, allow Olympia Development of Michigan to raze the Hotel Park Avenue to make room for part of the 45-block entertainment district planned with the arena during construction on the site.
The Hotel Eddystone, next door to the Park Avenue, is not included in the planned development site. ODM plans to redevelop the 13-story Hotel Eddystone into an 80 to 100 unit apartment complex.
